!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
it may happen. out of nowhere the guy called me tonight. He wants $3800. He says it needs a new rear strut. I said forget the strut and give it to me for $3000. He said ok.
it doesn’t look that bad. My brother-in-law and I did all 4 on a Camry and that was easy. I know this is a bit more involved but nothing crazy. I’d probably also do the timing belt just for shits and giggles in the very near future. I know we’d all encourage any one of us to buy a Viper with bald tires and 500000 miles for $5k but I’m looking for a serious thought. Should I go for it? If it all goes south, then jkm7680 has promised to buy the whole thing off me for his collection.
and some of my photos:

What’s the mileage?

172k

Oh boy. This is going to be a wild ride!

It looks astoundingly clean for that mileage, but that is also a very scary mileage for any Audi. This is likely to be a money pit, but you know they at least changed the timing belt once, because it wouldn’t be running had they not...
$3k sounds high based on the near-guaranteed problems. Their value drops to near zero with high mileage because they’re nothing but time bombs. I’d have pushed for $2-2.5k and would not use it as a DD.

See if you can get the service history on the car from your local Audi stealership.
What was your budget again btw?

For 3 grand, that’s pretty nice. It’ll probably pop a turbo at some point, which means it’s time for KO4s, but the six-speed is a total bonus. Very nice, kinda jealous.

Original turbos?
Not going to lie, an Allroad with those miles puts this song in my head. That’s about the time where “turbo failure into air suspension failure into engine problem into drivetrain issue into another engine problem into...” tends to happen. If you’re looking for a daily I’d be inclined to keep looking.
Also, I know
I’ve suggested this before
, but here’s a few other good turbo wagons. (Also damn is that Allroad heavy)

I’m thinking maybe if he would put the strut on I at least get a head start. Would be a DD

Nothing to add other than “you have fantastic taste in music”.

Actually, I lied. Why not a Volvo wagon?

Budget is like $8k but that would include a small loan. The Allroad I could pay cash and be done

Yes it’s very luring. For the most part it was in great shape. A couple dumb things like a broken coin holder or something.

The car fax had like 30 entries but want specific about what was actually done
![]() 12/22/2015 at 22:14 |

Yes! Use that as an excuse to set aside money (imaginary loan payment) and you’ll be good to go.

Do the turbos give any warning or is it just boom?

There are no v70r’s around here.

That shock replacement video was incredibly relaxing to watch.

No that’s the air bag. There is a strut too

It varies. Sometimes you can tell by a noise or sense of power loss. Sometimes it just blows.
As part of the inspection you should have someone who knows turbos take them off and check the bearings for play.

cool,but:

Oh, you need the whole thing? Dang.

This is not a car to depend on as your DD. I’d take that 164-S(?) you posted before i’d DD an allroad with that mileage that needs an air shock (spoiler: it’ll need three more soon)
this could be an entertaining vehicle to own, but you absolutely must have access to backup transport methods for when its out of commission for days at a time.
there is a REASON these have such low resale value.
